My heart has been broke before Just never by a whore Like a salted mine that's been found before Well my heart's been broke before I've missed my home before Now I've never missed it more Mother as I stand on your floor Am I still a sight for the sore Well his clothes wear like a war For each hole you see, there's 15 more Mother do you still love this boy of yours? I have had my heart broke before. This heart's been broke before.

about

Not All Thoughtful Stories (NATS) is, in a way, a tie over from Stories From Gilmore (thus the similarity in the name). I had noticed that many of the Stories From Gilmore songs were slow and mellow and I wanted to pick it up a little...put a new vibe in the music. NATS is short from the song, "Not All Thoughtful Stories Need Be Sad." That was the idea behind the transition..."Trent...not all the stories you tell need be sad."

Some people might listen to the words from NATS and think, "No Trent...this is still sad." I disagree. While some of the songs deal with departure and goodbyes, for me, there is a marked difference in the perspective on departure and goodbye. Hopefully, it comes across as saying, "Yes..this isn't what we planned...but that's OK."

Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot had an influence on the production of a few of these songs. Like Jeff Tweedy, I became interested in the concept of noise in my recordings -- static, chairs creaking, random stuff, etc. This is especially evident in the first two tracks. Aside from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, I didn't use a lot of reference songs for the composition and production of NATS. (And I only used that, as I said before, for a few of the songs). I think the reason this happened was simply due to timing. Because I now had an 8-track, most of my 'music time' was spent recording and listening to my own music rather than listening to other bands.

Aaron Robinson played drums on "His Clothes Wear Like a War," "Trace," "Love's Not Safe," and the original version of "Goodnight to All my Old Friends." These were mostly recorded in the same session as the songs from Stories From Gilmore. A

NATS has the same mixing problem found in Stories From Gilmore: there is simply too much bass in some of the songs. This is entirely my fault and there is a funny story as to why this happened. When I took the tracks to Ken for mastering -- he gave me a first draft. I made the mistake of listening to that draft on my iPod fm transmitter in my car. Well, for those who don't know, there is considerable loss in sound quality in those transmitters...so...I told Ken..."everything is good except the bass...I can't hear it." He reluctantly increased the bass -- probably thinking I was a moron. That's how it happened -- stupid isn't is? That problem is easily fix if you know how to manipulate the eq on whatever you listening device may be -- just pick a "pop" preset or something that emphasizes the treble and puts a dampener on the bass frequencies.

Download of entire album includes a bonus track from the Sincerity Sessions' "That Woman Walks."
